Synopsis
55 Steps tells the inspiring true story of Eleanor Riese (played by Hilary Swank), a patient in a psychiatric unit who brings a class action suit against her hospital for lack of patients' rights regarding medication. Colette Hughes (played by Helena Bonham Carter), a reluctant lawyer, is assigned to Eleanor's case despite initially wanting no part in it. Throughout the legal battle, Eleanor struggles with her mental illness while advocating for competent mental patients to have a say in their treatment. Meanwhile, Colette, who is initially skeptical of Eleanor's demands and focused solely on her career, finds herself forming an unlikely friendship with Eleanor, which eventually leads her to reassess her priorities.
