In the 1970s in San Diego, anchorman Ron Burgundy reigns supreme at Channel 4 news, accompanied by his trusted team of sports reporter Champ Kind, weathercaster Brick Tamland, and field reporter Brian Fantana. When ambitious journalist Veronica Corningstone joins the station, she challenges Ron's dominance, causing him to feel threatened and demoted. After losing his job, Ron becomes obsessed with regaining his fame by reporting on a rare Chinese panda giving birth in the U.S., leading to a series of events that involve gang warfare among news teams.
