Synopsis
The story unfolds in a decaying seaside resort along the Black Sea coast. Laevsky, a dissipated romantic, has run off with Nadya, another man's wife, but now grows tired of her and wants to abandon her. However, he faces two obstacles: he is broke, and Von Koren, an arrogant zoologist and former friend who cannot tolerate Laevsky's irresponsibility, is absolutely opposed to his plans. Laevsky confronts Von Koren about meddling in his affairs, but Von Koren manipulates the conversation into a challenge for a duel. Utterly discombobulated and honor-bound, Laevsky agrees to this absurd duel.
