Synopsis
In 1865 France, Timothee, a drifter who pretends to be deaf and mute, arrives at a village in southern France. He becomes infatuated with Josephine, the daughter of Dr. Hughes, and seeks hospitality at their house. During dinner, he performs peculiar tricks that evoke strange reactions from Josephine. The next day, when she's alone, Timothee puts her into a hypnotic trance and takes advantage of her. Despite appearing repulsed and frightened by him, Josephine follows Timothee into the woods. He continues to exploit her until he is eventually arrested and put on trial. The film leaves it ambiguous as to why Josephine agreed to follow Timothee.
