Synopsis
Effi Briest, a spirited seventeen-year-old, marries Baron von Innstetten at her parents' behest despite loving her cousin Dagobert instead. The marriage proves monotonous as Innstetten devotes himself to politics in the sleepy town of Kessin. Major Crampas arrives, an old friend of Innstetten and a charming womanizer. Effi finds herself drawn to him, initiating a passionate affair that goes unnoticed for years.
