Synopsis
Lulu McAfee, a woman living with schizophrenia in a San Francisco group home, leaves for Los Angeles in June 1999 to reconnect with her college sweetheart, Ben Clifton. She reveals that they have a son who was given up for adoption sixteen years ago. Despite his unhappiness in his marriage to Claire, a psychiatrist, and his job writing for television, Ben agrees to drive Lulu to Wisconsin to meet their supposed son on his sixteenth birthday. During the journey, Lulu attempts to rekindle their relationship and reignite Ben's idealism. Meanwhile, Claire flies to Madison, expecting her marriage to unravel. The truth about their son and the emotional fallout of the trip remain uncertain.
