Synopsis
Set in Suriname's sugar plantations during the latter half of the eighteenth century, 'Hoe Duur was de Suiker' follows Sarith and Mini-Mini as they grow up together on these plantations. Sarith, being mulatto like Mini-Mini but fairer skinned, is considered the most beautiful woman in the colony while Mini-Mini remains in her shadow, enslaved to her own half-sister.
