Synopsis
María, a 17-year-old Kaqchikel Maya girl, lives with her parents on a coffee plantation at the foot of an active volcano in Guatemala. She is betrothed to the farm's foreman but longs for independence and dreams of discovering the world beyond their remote community. María seduces a fellow coffee harvester who promises to take her to the United States. When he leaves without her, María must confront the reality of her situation and grapple with the cultural complexities of her own Mayan heritage.
