La religieuse follows Suzanne (Pauline Etienne), born into a bourgeois family in 18th century France with a natural talent for music. Sent to a convent by her parents, Suzanne initially resists but eventually accepts her fate after discovering she's illegitimate. She decides to revoke her vows but is deterred by the death of Mother Superior. The new Mother Superior, Sister Christine (Louise Bourgoin), subjects Suzanne to cruel treatment including food and clothing deprivation. Eventually transferred to another convent, Suzanne finds a Mother Superior (Isabelle Huppert) who develops an inappropriate affection towards her.
