Lenz returns to Paris after living in Northern England to investigate his mother Madeleine's mysterious disappearance. He enlists the help of his friend Louis. Along the way, Lenz meets Hélène, a German nurse married to Paul who struggles with the loss of her child and copes by hurting herself physically.
