Synopsis
Miranda, a widowed innkeeper in a small town near Venice during the late 1940s, continues to wait for her husband's return from war despite him being missing for years. She refuses to remarry and instead maintains a series of relationships with various men over the course of one year. Her lovers include Berto, a young transporter, who is aware of Miranda's arrangement, and Tony, a secret admirer who watches their affair unfold. Miranda engages in sexual encounters with different partners each season, leading them to believe they are her chosen substitute for her lost husband. The story culminates as Miranda eventually ends her search for the perfect replacement.
