Synopsis
Earl Brooks (Kevin Costner), a successful businessman and family man, harbors a dark secret: he's a meticulous serial killer with an alter ego named Marshall. When Marshall begins to assert control over Earl again after a period of inactivity, Earl struggles to maintain his composure. During one of his killings, he attracts the unwanted attention of a young woman named Tracy (Danielle Panabaker), who photographs him at the scene. Meanwhile, Detective Miranda Jenkins (Demi Moore) becomes suspicious of Earl's involvement due to his connection with some of the victims. When Marshall forces Earl to let Tracy go instead of killing her, Earl complies but takes her hostage in his home instead, intending to keep her there until he can figure out what to do with her. Detective Jenkins then arrives at Brooks' house, having traced him through his phone number found on one of the crime scenes.
