Synopsis
Normal People follows Marianne and Connell, two teenagers from different social backgrounds who meet at their secondary school in County Sligo, Ireland. Marianne is an intellectual outcast but academically brilliant; her home life is troubled due to her dismissive mother Denise and resentful brother Alan. Her father's abusive past is not spoken about. Connell, meanwhile, is popular, athletic, and from a working-class family; his mother Lorraine works for Denise as a cleaner. Despite his popularity, Connell remains silent during Marianne's bullying at school, creating initial tension between them.
Their relationship evolves over time as they weave in and out of each other's lives. They first grow closer when Marianne tutors Connell in English, and later become lovers while studying at Trinity College Dublin. Their dynamic is complex, with themes of power, class, and the desire to love and be loved playing out between them.
