Synopsis
At Oxford University, mathematics PhD student Martin (Elijah Wood) idolizes and hopes to meet his mentor, Professor Arthur Seldom (Sir John Hurt). He lodges with Mrs. Eagleton (Anna Massey), a friend of Seldom's, but finds her haughty and unsympathetic towards him and her daughter Beth (Julle Cox). Martin starts an affair with Lorna (Leonor Watling) while attending university lectures where he is put in his place by his idol. One night, Martin and Professor Seldom discover Mrs. Eagleton dead at her residence. They are interrogated by the police but decide to conduct their own investigation into the murder.
