A Spanish Cardinal, who has lived in the Vatican for 30 years, learns he has a year to live and that he has an illegitimate granddaughter. He returns home to Spain against the Pope's advice to sort out his worldly affairs, including managing a vineyard that supplies the Vatican. His primary goal is to marry off his daughter (the mother of his granddaughter) to his brother, a bachelor and atheistic physician, thereby legitimizing his grandchild and keeping the land within the family. However, life throws him curveballs as he deals with his imperious mother, his former lover (now married), her husband, his stylish prostitute daughter, and his brother's resistance to marriage.
