Synopsis
In 'Pelo Malo,' a nine-year-old boy becomes obsessed with straightening his naturally curly hair to resemble his idol, the popular TV character Chino y Nacho. His single mother, who works tirelessly to provide for them, becomes increasingly concerned and frustrated by her son's fixation. This concern escalates into panic when she fears her son might be gay due to his interest in his appearance and female pop stars like Lady Gaga. The film follows their strained relationship as they navigate this issue.

Résumé
'Pelo Malo,' directed by Mariana Rondón, is a Venezuelan drama that explores the complex dynamics between a mother and son amidst societal expectations and prejudices. The movie revolves around Junior's desire to straighten his hair, which triggers an unwarranted homophobic reaction from his mother. It is set in Caracas and provides a glimpse into the struggles of working-class families. The film premiered at the 2013 Berlin Film Festival and was nominated for the Golden Bear award.
