Synopsis

Edward Lewis, a wealthy businessman, hires Vivian Ward, a prostitute, to accompany him at social events while he's in Los Angeles for business. Initially, their relationship is purely contractual, but they soon develop genuine feelings for each other despite coming from different worlds. Edward introduces Vivian to the upscale lifestyle, taking her shopping and teaching her etiquette, while Vivian brings some warmth and spontaneity into Edward's otherwise rigid life. However, their differing backgrounds cause tension as Edward struggles with his desire for Vivian and his fear of being judged by his high society peers. Vivian also grapples with feelings of inadequacy and worries about returning to her old life after the week is over.

Résumé

Directed by Garry Marshall in 1990, 'Pretty Woman' is a romantic comedy that tells a modern Cinderella story set against the backdrop of Beverly Hills. The film explores themes of social class, love across boundaries, and self-discovery through its unconventional relationship between Edward Lewis (Richard Gere), a successful but emotionally detached businessman, and Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts), a vibrant and street-smart prostitute. Although the plot is primarily focused on their romantic involvement, it also touches upon broader issues such as capitalism and materialism.
