Synopsis
During World War II, Laila, an innocent Lappish girl and only daughter of reindeer herder Aslak, rescues a crashed German fighter pilot named Hans. They develop feelings for each other during his convalescence. Years later, after the war, Hans returns to Lapland as a freelance photographer and persuades Laila to move with him to Helsinki to pursue a career as a photo model. Initially happy, their relationship sours, and Hans abandons Laila. Left alone in the big city, Laila's life spirals out of control.
