Synopsis
Staircase follows Michael Peterson, a successful crime novelist living in Durham, North Carolina with his wife Kathleen and their blended family. On December 9, 2001, Kathleen is found dead at the bottom of the staircase in their home, her skull fractured by multiple blows. The police initially suspect an accident but later charge Michael with her murder after a bloody polo mallet is discovered in the couple's garage. Throughout the trial and subsequent appeals, Michael maintains his innocence, while the prosecution argues that Kathleen was killed during a violent argument. The series chronicles the 16-year judicial battle that ensues, as the Peterson family navigates the complexities of the legal system while dealing with the personal fallout of Kathleen's death.
