After independent Vivienne Le Coudy falls in love with Danish immigrant Holger Olsen, they build a life together in 1860s Nevada. When Olsen leaves to fight in the Civil War, Vivienne is raped by the violent son of a powerful rancher. After Olsen's return, finding Vivienne now with a young son, the two must confront the crime. Ultimately, Olsen hunts down Vivienne's tormentor to seek revenge.

The Dead Don't Hurt
is a Western drama written, directed, and scored by Viggo Mortensen, who also stars in the film. The story centers on Vivienne Le Coudy (Vicky Krieps), a fiercely independent French-Canadian woman, and Holger Olsen (Mortensen), a Danish immigrant who fall in love and settle in a remote part of Nevada in the 1860s. Their life together is disrupted when Olsen decides to fight for the Union in the Civil War. In his absence, Vivienne must fend for herself against Weston Jeffries, the violent and corrupt son of a powerful local rancher, who harasses and eventually brutally assaults her. When Olsen returns from the war, he discovers Vivienne has had a son. The film follows their journey as they confront the past and seek revenge, all while navigating their changed relationship and the harsh realities of the American frontier.
