The first part of Peter Greenaway's 'Tulse Luper Suitcases' trilogy follows the life of Tulse Luper through three distinct episodes. As a child during World War I in Newport, South Wales, Luper experiences the horrors of war and imprisonment. Later, as an explorer in Mormon Utah, he engages with the local community and their beliefs. Finally, as a writer in Belgium during the rise of fascism, Luper becomes caught up in political turmoil. Throughout his life, Luper accumulates 92 suitcases containing his belongings and experiences.

Directed by Peter Greenaway, 'Tulse Luper Suitcases, Part 1: The Moab Story' (2003) is the first installment of a sprawling multimedia project reconstructing the life of professional writer and prison inmate Tulse Luper. Born in 1911 in Newport, South Wales, Luper's life is pieced together from evidence found within his 92 suitcases, with each case corresponding to an atomic number. The film is a dense, comedic exploration of 20th-century history, packed with stylistic flourishes and spanning multiple genres including adventure, biography, drama, history, romance, thriller, and war.
