Synopsis
Kate Croy, secretly engaged to struggling journalist Merton Densher but knowing her aunt Maude would never approve due to Kate's mother's previous loss of wealth and marriage to an opium addict, meets terminally ill American heiress Milly Theale in Europe. Kate sees an opportunity to secure both love and wealth and devises a plan involving Milly and Merton. Meanwhile, Merton crashes a party attended by Kate and Milly, attracting Milly's attention. When Kate learns of Milly's impending death, she schemes to have her inheritance transferred to herself through Milly's will, intending to use it to improve her own life and secure Merton's future. However, complications arise as both men in their lives are drawn to Milly, leading to a tangled web of emotions.
