Synopsis
The story unfolds in Warsaw, Poland, circa 1939. Jan Zabinski and his wife Antonina manage the Warsaw Zoo together. As World War II approaches, they witness the Nazi invasion of their city. When the zoo is liquidated for the war effort, many animals are killed, but the Zabinskis refuse to let their empty enclosures be in vain. They transform the zoo into a sanctuary, hiding three hundred Polish-Jewish people in plain sight within the abandoned animal cages and facilities. Despite the constant threat of being discovered by the Nazis, Jan and Antonina persist with their dangerous plan, risking their lives to save others.
