In County Kerry, Ireland during World War I, a young woman named Rosy Ryan marries Charles Shaughnessy, an Irish school teacher. However, Rosy's attraction towards British Army officer Major Doyler leads her into an affair with him. Their relationship is discovered by the local Catholic priest and the Irish resistance, leading to Major Doyler being exposed as a British spy. The affair causes Rosy to be branded a traitor in her community, facing mob justice. Meanwhile, Charles becomes mute due to shell shock after witnessing his brother's death in World War I.
