Histoire

The story unfolds in Danzig during the years leading up to and during World War II. Oskar Matzerath, the son of a local dealer, exhibits unusual intelligence from birth. On his third birthday, he decides not to grow physically as he witnesses the madness unfolding around him on the eve of war. He chooses to remain at this age, using his tin drum as a symbol of protest against societal norms represented by his middle-class family and neighborhood. Oskar's refusal to conform and grow is met with indifference from those around him, leading to tragic consequences.

Résumé

Die Blechtrommel (The Tin Drum), released in 1979, is a German film directed by Volker Schlöndorff. The movie is an adaptation of the novel by Nobel laureate Gunter Grass, and explores themes of Nazism, identity, and innocence lost amidst the chaos of war. Through Oskar Matzerath's unique perspective and refusal to grow up, it offers a critique of passive acceptance in the face of evil.
