Born to a German father and African-American mother, she was primarily raised by her elder half-sister Yolanda. After graduating from Pierce College and having two daughters, Lane met The Notorious B.I.G. at a concert in 1995 who supported her rap ambitions. Following his death, she released her debut album 'Ice' and contributed to the soundtrack of 'Woo'. Her Grammy-nominated career began thereafter.
