Martha Watson, born in 1976, was an American track and field athlete specializing in the 100 meter hurdles. Initially lacking confidence and drive despite her natural talent, she had a disastrous Olympic trial but was eventually coached by Terry Tingloff at Cal Poly after being noticed by fellow athlete Torry Skinner. During their training together, Chris and Torry formed a romantic relationship, with Chris later switching to the pentathlon event due to her versatile athletic abilities. The film 'Personal Best' (1982) is based on their story of friendship, sexual relationship, and pursuit of athletic excellence amidst the competitive environment leading up to the 1980 Olympic trials.
